Splitting Cineform AVIs into smaller pieces?
I capture video into Cineform Aspect HD 1080p24, and sometimes I only need to keep a short clip from a long file.
What is the best way to split Cineform AVI files, without re-rendering? Tried VirtualDub, but unfortunately it produces unstable results for some reason. Need some simple app live VDub, but the one that would work 100%. (Don't want to use full-blown editor like Adobe Premiere Pro for this simple file splitting job...) |
I use VirtualDub for this almost everyday, it works great, so you need work out why it is not for you.

VirtualDub is by far the best tool for this job.
Make sure you are using the latest stable version. Under video select Direct Stream Copy, then HOME and END buttons to choose the beginning and end of your clip. Press F7 to save and away you go. I'd say that VirtualDub is the most useful tool in any video editor's arsenal. The fact that it keeps on getting better and better is a real testament to the amount of effort that the programmer puts in. |
VirtualDub works great for us too, especially for checking and chopping 1080p CF'ed material and for adding copyright info, etc.
Great tool! |
I got Vdub 1.5.7, with MPEG support.
What version are you guys using? |
This is very old. I've been using 1.7.x for a long while, and now 1.8.x is out.

Just tried 1.8.1, said to be stable, and it worked fine on one video segment.
Hoping for the best on others :) Thanks! |

I've had a recurring problem with VirtualDub and cutting multiple AVIs out of one 'donor' file. I select DirectStream copy, select my clip, and rather than save immediately I use the batch processor instead, then make the next selection etc etc. When it comes to working through the batch, VirtualDub errors out rather than saves the files. No problems with other codecs, only CineForm. Does it work for you with the latest VirtualDub? |
Richard, we're using 1.8.1 and so far it's been stable, but I confess we haven't done multiple cuts with this version, only end lops and all with 1920x1080p.
