The CS4 - Win 7 Plunge
 

After creating a Win 7 drive and installing CS4 with the latest update, I installed PHD 4, the latest build, and got mixed results.

The new Premiere is sleek, but a curious beast. When I opened my first CS3 project with it, it did a conversion and saved out to a new project, much like After Effects handles projects created with older versions.

All subsequent CS3 projects I opened did not go through the same process, and the results seemed to be clips that became corrupt once in the timeline. They would play cleanly from the bin, but corrupted in the timeline.

Another nagging problem was not being able to simply export a "movie"... it routed me through the god-awful medial encoder, which to my perverse satisfaction... promptly crashed. (oh c'mon... most of us have to be pretty masochistic to be doing this stuff)

Another annoyance is having to go into the each sequence property to set the preview format to MPEG rather than AVI (which is limited to SD).

So the verdict is to sit tight and see if the good folks at Cineform toss in another ball to juggle.. that being Prospect HD for Windows 7.

I did learn that I can live without the realtime features within CS4.... generating previews and monitoring in draft mode is doable.

So when the compatibility for Win 7 is ironed out for PHD 4, I am going to make my move... mainly because of the ability to operate in the 64 bit world. It's nice to have increased RAM... and I will certainly add more. For those of us making the jump from XP to Win 7, it's quite a dramatic one at least as far as the look and feel of things.

What's the latest from the rest of you and Win 7? Do I understand that Neo is now tweaked to work smoothly with Win 7?

ProspectHD4 now works fine (with CS3) in 64-bit Windows 7!

The update linked to in this forum 2-3 days ago caught it up to Neo....

Which build Graham? 214D didn't do it for me.

I was advised by Cineform to abandon CS3 in Win 7 and go with CS4.

UPDATE: I just spotted the link for build 215. Since I already have CS4 installed, I am going to uninstall my 214d PHD, and give 215 a whirl with CS4. If that doesn't work... then probably go back to CS3....thanks Graham!

That's the one I grabbed... it did not work with CS4, just as was stated by Cineform.

Reverted back to CS3, and same failure as before... red, upside down playback.

Not sure how you got yours happening Graham, but no go on this front. Thusfar, NO combination of Cineform or Adobe that functions with Win 7.

However, my CS3 Premiere project previews just fine in After Effects 8.0.02.

What needs to happen to "fix" Premiere's use of Cineform?

I had the red upside down problem and couldn't find a way around it; but I recently installed Prospect 4K in win7 both 64 and 32 running the setup with Vista compatibility and as admin and it works fine for me with CS3
