For everyone waiting for the CS4 RTE

It seems a lot of people are not aware that you can use the RED sequence presets for cineform files as well. get the importer from red.com

This gives you the option to use the Full, 1/2, 1/4 1/8 1/16 rez drop down menu.

It works fine and I am editing 4k cineform RAW at 1/2 rez at 24p...and I bet I could get 30p if I had footage. This is with a core i7 920 and 12 GB. any 1080p footage ect should be laptop editable

This has nothing to do with RAW...Adobe totally changed the way they do sequences for RED, and everyone may as well benefit. This is why I havn't been concerned about the RTE, and 80% of my footage is 4k RAW.

That all works without adding the extra importer.

Just select Draft or Automatic Quality in the Program Window.

sometimes for 4k footage the 1/4 rez is a nice feature...and for a laptop 1/8 rez

David Newman January 24th, 2010 09:24 PM

Yes, that is fair. The user that prompted your post (I think) didn't seem to know about Draft Quality mode, so I though it good to remind all on the standard functionality. The CineForm codec responses to full, half and quarter mode for playback, and uses 1/8 for thumbnails. I think when you request 1/8 in playback you get 1/4 scaled down -- which is still very fast.

i think actually in previous versions of CS4 ppro there was no visible change in Cineform footage below 1/4 rez....now there seems to be at 1/8 and 1/16...probably like you said...scaled down from 1/4

in a cineform preset then...is it possible in the future to get 1/4 rez as an option in the timeline? or if not maybe a toggle in the fancy new cineform toolbar?
also what is the "desktop playback fast" and "quality" scripts actually doing

David Newman January 24th, 2010 09:58 PM

We could add 1/4, we did that automatically for 4K in preview mode under Prospect 4K CS3. The "desktop playback fast" and "quality" scripts only impact playback under tools like WindowMediaPlayer and MPC (switching between full and half res.) The reason we don't regularly expose the quarter res mode (it is there in the DirectShow control panel for the decoder) is the decoder already is way fast on modern desktops. Full 4:2:2 decodes of 1080p are performed over 150fps, half over 280fps, so quarter over 500fps is just crazy -- plus these numbers only used less than half of CPU, so I can decode two streams at nearly this rate. I just run those tests on a random Canon 7D clip, on my 920 2.6GHz Core-i7 (a cheap desktop, 6GB Win7 x64.)

I will try it right away if it works i´m going to send you flowers.
Thanks.
