Where does timecode derive from?
 

David, Canon 7D original MOV files do not seem to have any timecode (readable by Premiere CS5, anyway.)

However, after conversion by HDLink to CFHD, they do display timecode that seems to be correct with up to 1 second precision (because clips always start with the whole second plus :00 frames.)

Where does HDlink get that timecode from?

We use the timestamp stored in the THM file, it is only accurate to the nearest second.

I'm trying to devise a system where Canon 7D's internal clock is sync'd with a PC running SiliconDVR, and thus two cams are sync'd.

However I get issues with 7D footage's TC being only up to 1 sec precise, just like you said.

Now, this guy:

VideoToolShed - QtChange

says that THM is supposed to be up to 1/100s of a second precise.

My personal experience is this:

1. all 7D MOV files converted via HDLink start with :00 frames timecode

2. but when THM file is present, timecode does display frames.

So... is THM precise up to 1 sec or 1/100s of a sec??

and... where does timecode come from in #1 above when there's no THM files??

Sorry, you are correct. We use the extra accuracy of the THM files when present, and you do get a frame number in the timecode field (I just checked.) Without the THM file we use the file create date, which is only 1 second accurate.
