Embarassing Audio Question

So I'm definitely posting this question for a "friend" of mine who makes videos, because I certainly wouldn't allow a mistake like this to occur.

Due to some equipment errors (and my "friend's" failure to be more vigilant) some audio for talking heads got recorded way to low.

So I.. er uh, my friend is very carefully processing the audio to normalize it and get rid of unwanted noise.

The interesting thing is that it isn't just hiss. There seems to be some kind of weird digital distortion in it (or so my friend tells me).

It is in the high frequencies and seems to be post capture only.

My friend and I both capture from a Sony FX1 using cineform on the medium (reccomended) setting.

Has anyone else run into something like this?

Is your friend using some type on noise sampling software to get rid of the hiss. If he is, then the distortion you are hearing may be result of the processing. it is very difficult, if not impossible, to get good audio from a really low recording.

thanks for the reply Glenn.
First of all I want to say that my friend is a real dummy.
He knows better than to just trust that his equipment will do what it has been doing for the last eight years. He knows he should carefully listen in the headphones throughout the shoot.

I'm actually (just recently) pretty certain that the wierd digital distortion is not a result of the noise filtering. I stumbled on something today that was very interesting.

Will post details within the hour. One more test....

actually, I'll post as a new thread.
