I've searched and I can't find anything definitive on this (in the larger forum)... maybe the experts here want to weigh in.

De-interlace while converting to SD

Shouldn't all those extra fields convert new frames to compensate for the slowdown, making SD footage with no repeated frames (just like you shot it overcranked)?

I tried two ways.

From a cineform project, I exported a progressive SD DV AVI from a 1080 60i clip slowed down 50%

Also tried to export the same from a SD DVI project by bringing in the 1080 60i clip and scaling it.

Both ways had the same result. Every other frame looked bad.

"Every other frame"?? Are you running Aspect HD v4.02, the patch you may need was released Feb 28.

there is no version 4.2 in the updates section of the website

I wrote an applescript that takes 2 sets of deinterlaced frame sequences (one odds only, the other evens only) and shuffles them like a deck of cards. I've tested it with Final Cut Express, but as it uses frame sequences, the only adjustment should be the initial frame offset.

It gets you a real slow down at half the resolution, you're trading spacial for temporal resolution.

2) thanks for posting your results. It was hard for my eyes to notice a difference in your quicktime file. What are your observations on a studio monitor? Have you tried a 25% slowdown?

I have not upgraded to PP2.0 or Cineform 4.0 yet. Do you still think I need this bug fix?

the process only can do 50% as it's basically treating each field as a separate frame, so 60i = 60p at half resolution. If you step through the vid frame by frame, you'll see that the blade blurs less in the de-interlaced footage than in the straight retimed footage. It only does 50% speed of what ever you're using, but they are real time slices :)

This footage was not filmed specifically with this purpose in mind, if it was, I would have shot it at 1/120 to get correctly timed 180 degree slices. That would have looked cooler :)

The sport is Balloon Fencing, The guy in the green runs the Fencing Booth at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival (I'm in the gray), and the balloons make the fencing approachable by the public. It's Sabre with a modified (head only) target area. It's also not done on a fencing strip, it's a ring (square) sport, so you can circle your opponent as well.
