External RAID

Hello David,

I have a question in regards to external RAID storage and Prospect. What type of storage is recommended to sustain 4 real-time streams of 1080p in Prospect?

Would you recommend a 4 or 5 disk array formatted as RAID 0?

What type of RAID to Computer interface connection do you recommend? Dual-channel Firewire 800, eSata, SCSI, or Dual Gigabit Ethernet?

Geoff,

I'm going to be curious to see David's answer as well, however in our shop we just purchased a couple of 1 Terrabyte external drives from Western Digital that run FW800 and it's been rock solid now for the last few weeks running 24x7 (we don't shut down the edit boxes) and despite some major fan noise, they really are nice.

We've been setting up projects where the video files are on the external raid and we edit on the internal raid, no hick-ups at all, no major stress tests either however, rare to do more than 1 video stream with some fx on our stuff.

Sorry this not my area. For 4 stream of 1080p, you will need to sustain 64-80+MB/s, that might be too much for Firewire 800. This issue is not the drives themselves, rather the bus they are connected with.

David,
"64-80+MB/s” read/right or throughput for processing?

Just Interested if the Media HDV should be ritired

sustained read throughput.

yeah external sata is the way to go for this. Unless you got the bankroll to pony up for external SCSI then do that for the best performance.
