Flash XDR Audio Output

In designing the Flash XDR, we choose to have two regular sized 3-pin XLR inputs for the external mic/line inputs. We felt that this was important.

For the audio output, due to the lack of available space for two more 3-pin XLR outputs, we choose to use a single, two-channel, 5-pin male XLR connector.

So, a 5-pin Female XLR to two 3-pin male XLR adapter cable is necessary to work with standard XLR cables, or most camera inputs.

It is very desirable to route your audio signals first to the Flash XDR, then route the output to the camera for a scratch track (if one will be recording in the camera in addition to recording in the Flash XDR).

This will require the use of the above mentioned adapter.

We are getting ready to have these adapters manufactured.

We would like input as to how long the cables should be.

For example, if the Flash XDR is mounted on the back of a Canon XL H1, the adapter legs do not need to be very long, maybe 10 to 12 inches, since the XLR inputs are at the back of the camera.

For other cameras, their XLR inputs may be located at the front or side of the camera necessitating much longer legs on the adapter.

So, we would appreciate your comments on how long we should make the legs of the adapters. We may need to make two versions, one short and one long.

Your comments and suggestions will be appreciated.

This is a standard cord for splitting a stereo mike to L/R channels. They're available at any pro audio source from multiple manufacturers in lengths from 6" to 200'.

Why do you want to make your own?

Dear E.J.,

We have been following the availability of these at various sources.

While they are currently available from B&H, they are usually a special order item with an expected two week delay.

We felt that this would be a convenience for our customers, especially for our international customers.

Most of the the ones we have found are available in only one length, and thus will not work with some cameras.

We do not plan on building them ourselves. We have found a reputable source for very high quality cables.
