So What's Next? Studio Deck?
With Compact Flash cards about the same price as HD Tapestock and falling all the time, you could conceivably create a rack mount version of Flash XDR for the post production machine room. I'm not sure what the market would be like for such a deck, but it seems within reason that compact flash could become an archival medium. If that happens, we'll need studio equipment.

Dear Michael,
I think the concept of a "Studio Deck" is a great idea. What features would you like to see in a "Studio Deck"? |
Quote:
The ability to put in more than one CF Card, 3-4 would be nice. The ability to work with other formats from other brands that shoot on CF cards. Professional outputs on the back in at least one model to go to production monitors. Those are a few of the things that would really work well with a CF deck. There are probably a few other things that I could think of if I had more time. |
Dear Louis,
Thank you for your input. Four, or more, CF card slots would be included in my theoretical "Studio Deck". These would need to be mounted on the front of the deck for accessibility. Specifically which "professional output" would you want? HD-SDI is a given. Multiple HD-SDI outputs would probably be included. I assume that you would want the LCD to be mounted on the front of the device so that it could be used while the device is mounted in a 19" rack. Would you like a separate monitor output? I feel that a separate monitor output, so we could drive a “clip and viewing” monitor of your choice would be desirable. If we provided this, then you could choose the size and quality of monitor that suits your needs. Also, the monitor could be placed where it was convenient, separate from where it is convenient to have the deck. Along the same lines, one or both of the HD-SDI outputs could be used for clip selection and viewing. I feel that remote control of the deck is an essential feature, as are convenient front mounted manual controls. |
Definitely RS422 remote in and out for editing to/from CF card. An editing keypad/shuttle wheel for remote controlling other decks. (maybe this is overkill, but i'm looking at my HDCam Deck and figuring we could replace it.)
Timecode readout Possibly an LCD on the front for menus and preview picture. Timecode in and out. Character on/off to a discreet monitor output. Up convert to HD/ down convert to SD with pull down might be a good optional board. One touch cloning of card to card. Analogue/SDI and possibly AES audio input. HDSDI and possibly Component in/out. |
Dear Michael,
Thank you for your suggestions. Could you please elaborate on "Character on/off to a discreet monitor output."? Would this be, for example, the filename/number, etc. to the monitor output? |
Character on/off is for visual timecode, deck status etc, on a remote monitor. I guess file name, user bit, deck status, timecode, any other things that seem like they make sense to provide feedback to an editor or someone who is in a room other than the one the deck is in.

Dear Michael,
Thank you. I just wanted to be on the same page as you. |
Great idea Michael.
With Dan & Mike on board, the best is yet to come! Cannot wait for the nanoflash first. Cheers |
Thinking ahead, I think the deck would also need a data ports: fibre optic / firewire / esata for faster than real time mastering. The fibre channel would allow the deck to be accessed from distances not easily available with the other two. The others would be best if the deck were in the same room with the edit system.

Dear Michael,
The newest version of Firewire that have been announced are very fast. I hope they become widely adopted. ESATA is also very fast. I hope everyone understands that our current focus is: 1. Providing all of the features and reliability that we promised in the Flash XDR as well as world class customer support. 2. Providing the nanoFlash as soon as possible. Mike and I have been discussing a "Studio Deck" for the future. |
