Sony Vegas
 

1. As part of our MXF format testing, I have been testing our MXF files in Sony Vegas 8.0.

I have learned that XDCAM HD422 support was added to Sony Vegas in Version 8.0(c).

Our MXF files will be in 4:2:2 HL format, so the above support is necessary.

If you are not using 8.0(c) or later, then you will not be able to place our MXF files on the timeline.



2. While Quicktime is generally supported in Sony Vegas, the 4:2:2 HL format codec, which we use is not currently available in a standard installation of Sony Vegas 8.0.


3. The proper procedure for editing our MXF files with Sony Vegas, is to first copy the clips (files) from the CompactFlash card to a hard disk on your computer.

This is a necessary step to avoid a problem.

Sony Vegas, when it opens a clip, creates a ".SFK" file (an audio waveform file), in the folder (directory) that the clip resides.

So, if you edit from the CompactFlash card, then Vegas will write a file to the card.

This will cause a problem if you re-insert the same card in the Flash XDR and record more clips without first formatting the card. This will cause all new clips to be corrupted.

So, we recommend that you copy your clips to your hard disk or other storage, then reinsert the card in the Flash XDR, then format the card prior to recording.



We may find a way to detect this condition and take steps to prevent any problem.

I edit in Vegas as well as FCS and can't wait to try this out! Vegas 8.1 is the latest incarnation and runs under Vista64.

Thanks for the warning about the sfk files potentially making difficulty reloading the cards.
