FCP 7.0 Says it isn't 24p !
 

Hi Dan:
I have shot an interview which I'm converting now to MXF with the FCP QT MOV to PC MXF conversion application. BTW, very nice tool. When I open 100 Mbps second Flash XDR video files in FCP 7.0 it understandibly says it's only a 50 Mbps file to trick the app into accepting it, but it also says the video *is Not* 24p, but 1080i 60. Why ?? Please advise.

EDIT: Is the format also being misreported as part of this *tricking* of the edit application to accept the higher data rate videos files ?

If the Canon XL H1 is in 24p mode, the output of the HD-SDI is 1080psf24.

This looks like 1080i60 to some editors.

This week we are expecting to release the firmware update for the Flash XDR that adds Pulldown Removal. Then you will not need to perform pulldown removal.

....Pull Down Removal ! That would be totally COOL !

...Wait a minute Dan. The Canon XL H1 is *not* a PSF camera, so why would you want to do pull down removal ? Canon HDV cameras use 24 F not P or PsF. So now I'm confused. What are you saying ?

Dan was referring to the HD-SDI output, not the HDV recorded to tape.

Canon, in order to be honest, calls their 24p, 24f, since they use interlaced chips to produce 24p. While the chips are interlaced, the image is captured (both fields) at the same time when working in 24f mode.

So, Canon 24f = 24p. This has been thoroughly investigated.

Now, the second part of your question is about PSF.

Almost all cameras, when they output 24p over HD-SDI, output it as 24psf.

Our Flash XDR and nanoFlash check for true 24p or 23.976p (sometimes called 23.98p), then we internally set up to handle the input as psf.

In this case, the XL H1 generates 24f (actually 23.976f), it goes out as 23.976psf in a 1080i59.94 stream, and we convert it to 23.976p.

Thus, the camera generates true progressive (from interlaced chips), then gets output as PSF (Progressive Segmented Frame), and we convert it back to true progressive before we record it.

And all of this happens, for 24f or 24p, automatically without you having to set anything in our menu.

...Hi Chris. I was referring to the HD-SDI as well, but I was unaware 24 F is true 24 P. Thanks for the clarification. I have always found this a little unclear.
