Advice on new Sony EX3
 

Hi,

Would be very grateful for some advice re this camera, new out the box.

I am a Canon XL H1 user. This camera I understand.

Manual mode.

Iris open===Picture gets lighter.

Close shutter==== picture gets darker

Nice and simple.

Now you can concentrate in being CREATIVE!!

How can I change the settings of the EX3 so I have manual control
through all the functions.

In the Canon I could create a colour profile and that was the same
no matter what mode I was in.

This camera piclles the brain.

Great quality at 280 mbps I frame. Superb.

I think better than Sony 750.

Let me suggest Doug Jensen's PMW-EX3 Field Guide published by Vortex Media.

If you check the EX3 forum here and on the other board, you will find a wealth of information on painting this camera. I have both EX-1 and EX-3 and find the images amazing and the amount of control to be practically infinite.

Many thanks to your reply and suggestions.

There is an article on the COW regarding the Ambiguity of the settings.

Long article regarding adjusting the shutter and how misleading.

I must have been unluck and pressed the wrong thing in the internal menue and just could'nt get the manual shutter to work.

Reset all and all is well re shutter and shutter blur!.

Now the white balance is next... any suggestion?

As I mentioned shooting to the XDR at 280 mbps I frame is just stunning.

In the settings for the various Picture Profiles, you can selected an Offset White option. That will allow you to add/subtract color temp to/from whatever temperature is registered when you white balance. You really should only be adjusting this if connected to scopes.
Otherwise, B channel is ATW which you can switch to MEM if you don't ever want to use ATW but instead have 2 memory positions.

But Chris should actually move this discussion to EX-3 because we're now definitely OT from the Nano.

It's actually a pretty simple camera to use (as they all are really).
The manual controls on the lens are probably the best feature on the camera! Pull the focus ring back towards you until it clicks and it's in manual focus. The iris is on the lens where it should be. Shutter you shouldn't really be touching as it'll do funny things to your shots with all video cameras. Best plan is set it to 180 degrees in the menu, this way you get 1/50th at 25P or 1/120 at 60P etc., and it'll change automatically when you're in variable frame rate mode as you change frame rate. You should never really use shutter speed to change the picutre brightness, us aperture and NDs.
Apart from the fact that you've got 1080P, 1080i and 720P to choose from and a variable frame rate option the EX3 shouldn't be any more difficult to use than the XLH1 - easier I'd say. Hope you get your head around it, I'm sure you will after playing with it a short while.
Any more specific queries don't be afraid to ask - there are loads of EX3 experts here (I'm not one of them!)
