Help with workflow 25p
 

Hi,

Would appreciate some advice re my workflow.

Camera Sony EX3 shooting to XDR 180 mbps mxf.

Copy to Nexto 500Gb drives on location.

Will purchase new Mac Book Pro 17" with Esata.

Hope to copy from Nexto drive onto Caldigit 4Gig raid 1 via Firewire 800 in the evenings.

Will format caldigit with fat 32 I presume.

All I need to do is view my mxf files in the Sony XDCam viewer with my client.

There will be no editing on location.

Will edit back in London on AMC.

At this moment in time, subject to change anytime, Avid works with our 50 Mbps Long-GOP files, but not at 100 Mbps and above. Avid is working on this, so we expect this to change soon.

Avid does work with all of our I-Frame Only files at any bit-rate.

Thus, at this time, we recommend using I-Frame Only at a high bit-rate, since you will be editing in Avid Media Composer. If you were editing in Final Cut Pro you could use any bit-rate, Long-GOP or I-Frame Only.

To use the highest bit-rates, you need fast CompactFlash cards.

Sony XDCam Viewer, Version 2.30 will work well to view any of our MXF files on a PC.

The Sony FCP Plug-In should work to view the files on a Mac. But, please test this if you are using a Mac and do not have FCP installed. (Personally, I have not tested this, but I believe that this does work, I am relying on the information provided by others.)

Hi Dan,

I forgot to mention I am using I frame.

All I need to do is view the MXF files.

I have the viewer and have a workflow already in Avid on a PC.

The problem is that after this shoot the Mac goes to my wife.

So I need to use the Mac Book Pro for this excersise and boot it in
PC mode.

Is this been done successfuly.

Dear Mike,

Viewing our MXF files on a PC using the Sony Clip Viewer, version 2.30 is normally very easy and works well.

I assume that a Mac booted up in PC mode will work just as well.

I hope that anyone who has actually done this will offer their experience.
