NanoFlash works well at -17c (1f)
 

Just to let everyone know that the NanoFlash once again performed flawlessly on my latest shoot 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle in northern Norway. I was up there trying to capture the Northern Lights once again. We were a little unlucky with the weather this year, it was too warm and cloudy as a result but we did get one night where the Aurora came out for us. I was shooting with a PMW-350 and NanoFlash and as usual it all worked perfectly. I'll be posting some footage soon.

Thanks for the feedback. Great to hear the nanoFlash worked at -17C. We tested in the lab at -30C, but only for a brief period of time. We honestly don't know the lowest operating temperature for the nanoFlash, but now I am motivated to get that block of dry ice and do the proper low temp testing.

We did find that the nanoFlash stopped working at about 100C, but I don't recommend running the nanoFlash at such a high temp.

Here is a page of harrowing torture tests by Phase One, maker of high end digital backs for medium format. See cold tests, heat tests, humidity and strength. They put a back in a cooler of dry ice for 1/2 an hour. Very Cold.

Capable of 16 bit capture these backs are real amazing... I am a P21+ user. Great Gear!

The Camera and NanoFlash were out at -17c for 16 hours at a time. At night they were stored in at a slightly warmer -5c.

Truly humbling and beautiful Alister. I grew up in NE Pennsylvania on Lake Erie and we used to see Northern Lights, but nothing on that scale. Really nice work.

That was a very dim show. In previous years they have been much better for me. Considering how active the Sun is right now it was quite disappointing. I'm going up to Iceland to do some stereoscopic workshops with my dual EX/NanoFlash 3D rig at the end of the month so maybe I'll have better luck then.
