Great nano recordings but not needed twice!

I was out on location yesterday shooting a presentation to camera. The main clips were around 15 to 20 seconds each. All nano settings as previous, yet most (not all) of the clips somehow recorded twice. The second time the clip may not have totally doubled up but lasted about half the original clip's time. Some only 5 seconds and a couple of others, 1 or 2 seconds.

No, the pre buffer recording was NOT activated. All clips including the doubled up ones recorded just fine but I am at a loss to understand why this happened.

One small but possibly significant point is that although I formatted the card prior to use, there was about 1 second of a previous clip from the previous recording session still on the card. Only noticed when I copied the clips over to HDDs after the shoot.

I use SanDisk Extreme III 30Mb/s 32Gb cards. I have never had this problem before.

The dual recorded SxS cards did NOT record with doubled up clips. The nano records when the camera outputs t/c.

Double Record

If you have the nanoFLASH set to TC trigger it will record clips when played back from the camera. So if you reviewed the footage as you went the nano would record camera out from SxS.

If you mean that after formating the CFs you still had some picture in the card, is because wasn't properly formated.

George, you are correct, but when I didn't check back the recordings, I cannot understand what happened. Everything recorded just fine, mind you, so I am happy.

Thanks for your answer.

Hello David,
You got a doozie with this one. Question is the timecode identical for both clips or is there a variation?

George Griswold February 12th, 2010 03:48 PM

clips

Are the duplicates on the same card or same clip on two cards?

Dan Keaton February 12th, 2010 06:47 PM

Dear David,

Well, this certain is surprising.

To be honest, I have no idea, at this time, how this could have happened, other than review of the clips in camera.

Could you run a controlled test to see if this still happens?

Correct!
But when the nano states that the card was formatted properly, I have to accept that it was formatted properly. No idea why it did not format properly when it stated that the card had been formatted properly. (Sorry for the tongue twister).

Dan,
Beat you to it but I used another card. No problems.

George, the clips were recorded to just one card, about 30 mins worth of material.

Lance, good question. I did not check that as I deleted the duplicated clips from the card once I found that I could without affecting the fully recorded clips. I did that to save confusion during clip selection and save on HDD space and I just did not need or want the second clips.

Issue solved!
My audio operator fiddled with the record review on the lens while I was directing the talent. I asked him to be with the camera as it was on the tripod but I didn't expect him to start pressing buttons, let alone see him do it.

So the record review was the culprit

Dan Keaton February 16th, 2010 07:07 AM

Dear David,

Thank you for the update.

It is always nice to hear that a problem has been solved.

In our upcoming Public Beta, we will detect duplicated timecode and not record, thus allowing easy Record Review, or Playback in camera.

That sounds great Dan.
Thanks
