First Nano job

All went well.. recorded to tape .. and last day went for some just to CF recording.. easy to change settings in the menu... shooting HDX900.. recording to NF QT 1080i 25p 50Mbps.. all totally fine from camera side..
Some feed back from the editor ..

Pro,s

Very happy not to have to rent/go and get deck.. very quick down loading from card reader to computer.. saved day ..at least...

Con,s

Files huge and very heavy for processors, slow render time..and no compositing in After Effects...although fine for shake.. would like files to be in Apple Pro Res 422..
Says he would convert all footage to pro Res over night next time..

Any comments?

Thanks

Dear Robin,

Could you please provide some details?

What bit-rate where you using?

I-Frame Only or Long-GOP?

I know that you recorded in QT from your original post.

What editor were you using?

Are you working on a PC or a Mac?

Robin Probyn March 25th, 2010 08:29 AM

Hi Dan

Iam not an editor myself at all.. so just passing on his comments..

Shot QT 1080i 25p 50 Mbps.. long GOP..

Editor is a mate here.. he uses FCP 7.. on a Mac.. not sure which one.. but nothing ancient.

Seems he feels the files are very big in XDCAM 422.. and didnt work with After effects.. maybe he has an old version? but shake was fine..

Would iframe make any difference ....

Camera wise no problems.. and he says what ever much better than tape/deck route.. but he did have the above comments.. so I thought I would see what others have to say..

Thanks

Dear Robin,

MainConcept offers a Adobe Plug-In so that our files can work with Adobe CS3/CS4.

Please contact me if you want to purchase this as they have a special price for nanoFlash owners.

Hi Dan

Ok thanks.. have sent this to the editor

Dear Robin,

At 50 Mbps, our XDCam 4:2:2 files are appoximately 0.4 Gigabytes per minute, or 2.5 minutes of footage per Gigabyte. These are not large HD Files.

Yes, they are twice the size of HDV at 25 Mbps, but you get much higher quality images.

Hi Dan

I,ll pass it on.. on all my jobs I have used my HDX900 or digibeta.. ingested by player.. so he is not used to working HDV 25 Mbps.. in that the XDCAM files would seem huge..
Interesting for me to learn a bit about the other side of the job.. instead of just giving the tapes to the dir..

Thanks again for your continued support..

Robin
