NanoFlash with a Canon D5MkII
 

Has anyone tried recording the HDMI out of a Canon D5MkII camera? Will this work?

Will you like it? No

The 5D outputs 480p when recording. The signal is unusable for external recording.

Yes, I know while recording on the D5 itself it switches to 480p, but, when not recording on the D5 (Preview), it outputs 1080. Is this recordable on the Nano?

The problem is that it doesn't fill the screen with the image from the sensor. It shows a scaled down image in the center of the screen with lots of black space around all sides, top, and bottom.

You would be recording about a 1/2 sized image that you would have to crop the black areas from in post. It at best would be SD.

All the 5D Mk II owners must e-mail Canon every week asking them

to open up the HDMI out on the next firmware release.

I am confused on this. Doesn't the camera output 1920x1080 when in preview mode, then switch to 480 when in record? and doesn't the nanoflash have its own record function (I don't own one, so I am just guessing here) so in theory, couldn't the nano just record the 1920x1080 preview video? I have never hooked up a monitor to a 5D so maybe I am missing something simple. also, this would probably be in the too perfect to be true category, but if the nano is recording on its own, wouldn't that bypass the 12min/4gb per file limit?

I want to get one of these for green screen with my EX3, but being able to use it with the 5D would be a huge plus.

You'll have to connect a 5d to a monitor to see the real problem. The Canon does output a 1080p signal when in preview BUT it does not fill the frame with the image from the camera. It is a image that has black bars all the way around. If you crop the black bars out what you will have left is something closer to an SD resolution. Not at all useful to record the HDMI signal.

ahhh, ok, that make sense.

I own both a canon 5d II and a newer Panasonic Gh2. I know for the first one, i will not have any real benefice for recording with a nanoflash, what about the GH2?
Could you give me some light please about it? Is the current HDMI option only for "monitoring"?

Is not just about size.
There are many ways to output a sub-standard signal, so no worth to be recorded on a NANO or any other device. Imagine a 1920x1080 8b/420 stream (even Uncompressed) out of that HDMI: You would get just a bit more quality on the NANO than recording on the CANON.
What you really need is Full Raster 8/10b Uncompressed out of that HDMI, and as you can imagine that option is more protected than Fort Knox.
They are japanese, but not kamikazes :-)

Dear Vincent,

We take a very conserative approach to the DSLR's.

They need to have a clean (free of icons or other info) on the HDMI

plus

They need to have a high-quality HDMI output. Line Skipping or Pixel Skipping to create the image leaves a lot to be desired.

The following video seems to indicate that when the GH2 goes into record, the icons can be made to go away. This is not as great as being able to remove all of the icons on the Live View output, but it helps.

We welcome comments from anyone who has tested the Panasonic GH2 or any other DSLR with the nanoFlash.
