Can't import Nanoflash files into Win CS5 and gamma shift in Mac

We just did our first commercial shoot with the Nanoflash and are having all sorts of problems. We shot on a Sony F3 with onboard SxS card and the Nano in 1080 25P.

Problem 1:
Imported 220mbit I-frame Nanoflash QuickTimes imported into Premiere CS5 are noticeably lower in gamma (darker) compared to the XDCAM SxS MP4 files. The difference is very noticeable. When played in FCP, the gamma is identical.

Problem 2:
Importing the same Nanoflash QuickTimes into Windows Premiere Pro (on our Win7 PC) gives a message as I import, "Codec missing or unavailable".

Any clues?

Peter

Problem 2: Have you tried converting the MOV to MXF (using the free converter available from the CD website)? I'm pretty sure the MXF files work a lot better on PC's (do you have Premiere CS5 on the PC)?

Thanks Simon, that worked on both CS5 on Mac and CS5 PC. It seems crazy though to have to convert XDCAM Nano files just to edit with. We have a 120gb project which will become a 240gb project after converting all the files. I hope there is no quality loss.

Still I'm glad we can complete the edit. Thanks again.

Dear Peter,

There is no quality loss when using our File Converter.

This is a re-wrap of the file. The Headers and Trailers get changed, the "Essense" (the actual Video and Audio) does not get changed.

Generally, for editing on PC's,we recommend shooting in ".MXF" (there can be exceptions).

For editing with Final Cut Pro, we recommend shooting in ".MOV" (Quicktime).

If you need to edit on both, or don't know, then we recommend shooting in ".MOV" as we provide a ".MOV" to ".MXF" converter.

If you shoot in ".MXF" and need ".MOV" the Sony XDCam Transfer Utility will handle this.

Thanks Dan, We were always going to edit in CS5 on the Mac, but the weird gamma shift (twowards dark) is a strange one. I can send you a link that shows the effect in a split screen.

Is there any gamma issue with the MXF files? If not, I would believe the issue is due to Quicktime and how Adobe has their own special 64bit Quicktime decoder since Apple has not released a 64bit QT.

No the MXF files are fine which leads me to thinking that CS5 is to be blame here. Very frustrating. I have CS5.5 arriving next week, so they may help. Thanks for the interest.

I wouldn't blame Adobe especially since the MXF files work fine. Also, Quicktime has been known to have gamma shift issues for years.
