New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Info on Nikons website for its new DSLRs (D4 / D800) states that "Built-in HDMI lets you view footage on an external monitor or record uncompressed 8-bit 4.2.2 footage directly to an external recording device. "
(D4 Digital SLR Camera | SLR Digital Cameras) Looks like this could be a good match made in heaven for the Nanoflash? HAs anyone been able to verify that it actually works? |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
I would still be cautious recording dark scenes as the Nanoflash over HDMI still has a black level kill switch. I've heard a HDMI to HD-SDI converter solves the issue, but have yet to see that work in action.

Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Dear Simon,
We are very excited about these new cameras. Nikon certainly states that their HDMI output is suitable for recording. I also feel that the nanoFlash will be ideal for recording the HDMI output of these cameras. We do not have either of these cameras in our lab yet, sorry. |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Dear Jack,
Time will tell, but I doubt that we will have a problem recording the HDMI video output of these cameras. I doubt that they would put out illegal black levels. In any case, we will be correcting this issue. |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Dear Dan,
Would you already have some news on the NanoFlash combined with the Nikon D800? Thanks! Roelf Wentholt |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Dear Roelf,
We are working with Nikon. We have a Nikon D800 coming to our office soon. We coordinated the delivery with the schedule of our Chief Engineer. Thus, we hope to resolve the issues soon. |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Dear Dan,
Any progress to report on the D800 and the nanoFlash? |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Dear Alastair,
We tested the nanoFlash with the Nikon D800. Here is a report from Andy, our Lab Manager: The nanoFlash works very well with the Nikon D800, There are two issues we noticed with our Internal Testing, and have contacted Nikon about these issues. The nanoFlash does not currently work with the Nikon in 1080p24 due to a 3:2 cadence problem. (We lock to the 3:2 cadence, but then the D800 changes the cadence.) We also noticed a issue with 1080p29.97, but all other formats worked very well (720p60, 1080i59 etc) As for setup that depends on your Rig, for our Tests we used a 4" Mini to Mini HDMI cable, and had the nanoFlash mounted on the HotShoe Mount on top of the Camera, This worked very well for balance, We also have some sample videos from the Nikon D800 and nanoFlash ConvergentDesign's channel - YouTube |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
HI Dan it has been a while, hope all is well. Nano Flash just keeps ticking and working away.
Any change with the Nikon D600 or D800 regarding 29.97fps out HDMI? This would be a deal breaker for these camera for me and I am within days of buying a new DSLR for my business. |
Re: New Nikons and the Nanoflash
Dear Paul,
I will check and report back. |
