Odyssey7Q - Image Analysis Tools in Log Mode

Dear Friends,

Our team has been working to improve the Odyssey7Q, even before we ship the first one.

Background:

Many professional use Log mode.

Log Mode allows one to record a higher dynamic range in a smaller number of bits.

We have a video that explains S-Log on our website.

For example, one can take 12-bits of video data and record it (very effectively) in Log mode in10-Bits.

Some cameras take footage greater than 12-Bits and use Log mode to record it into 12-Bits.

Some Log footage, such as Sony S-Log and others will look very "Flat" and washed out when viewing on a regular monitor. So, many monitors, such as our Odyssey7Q support using a LUT (Look Up Table) to convert the Log footage to Recommendation 709 (Rec. 709) for viewing.

This is nothing new, and not a Convergent Design innovation, but an expected feature in a professional monitor.

Our New Feature

But there is a dilemma, most, if not all monitors do not allow one to accept Log, and use image analysis tools, such as Waveform Monitoring and Zebras in Log mode, while viewing the images in Rec. 709.

Thus, we are adding a very innovative feature to the Odyssey7Q.

One will be able to input footage in Log Mode.

Use image analysis tools, Waveform Monitor and Zebras, in Log Mode.

Record the footage in Log Mode.

Monitor the image on our 7.7" OLED in Rec. 709, or Log Mode, as desired.

Use our very advanced Focus Assist tools in Rec. 709.

Send the image for monitoring to external monitors, in Rec. 709, or Log Mode, as desired.

And we will be able to send our Image Analysis Tools to external monitors as well.

Benefits:

We feel that this is a nice advancement for industry professionals that use cameras with Log modes.

These cameras include the Sony FS700, F3, F23, F35, F5, F55, F65, Canon C300 and C500, All ARRI ALEXA's and many others.

One may wonder, what is the advantage of us offer this new feature.

1. If one is accepting Log footage, and monitoring in Rec 709, and using a Waveform Monitor or Zebras on the Rec. 709 image, then they are not truly analyzing the actual image, thus the readings are misleading. Analyzing for clipping in Log mode is much more accurate.

2. If one is accepting Log footage, and monitoring in Log mode, one can focus as effectively as when one focuses in Rec. 709 since the Log image can be very flat.

Thus, we feel that this is a significant advancement that we will be offering in our Odyssey7Q at no extra cost.

I will be happy to answer questions about this.

Respectfully,
