After Effects: Keyframing Problem

A true After Effects beginner here with a question....

In a 12 second shot, I would like it to begin to snow about six seconds into the shot and last for the shot's duration. I'm guessing this involves keyframing, but I am not able to get it to begin at the specific time; I'm only able to get it to snow for the whole shot, beginning to end. Can someone supply the basic steps please?

Try putting your 12 sec. shot on one layer and your snow on a layer above that. Grab the left edge of the snow and pull it to the right to the point you want it to begin. You may have to fool around with opacity keyframes. if so give me a yell and I will try and get you thru it.

Thanks a lot. I got it now. I wanted to compare it to ParticleIllusion, and I have found PI so much easier--at least for me.
