Dark Coat is Noisy
 

Hi,

One guy I've been interviewing is wearing a dark brown coat. The whole video is fine. Even he is, but his coat is kind of shimmering or wavy the rest of him is fine just his coat. Any ideas how to correct? The coat in the original .avi is fine but after keying out the background this happened.

I would suggest the coat is not pure brown and there are shades of the key color in the coat. Don't know the solution other than to use another key color.

I've also read here (still need to try it) that you can use your keyed footage as a matte on the same unkeyed footage. That way the image that hasn't been keyed is using the keyed footage as a matte but without any of the issues of what you're describing. Did that make any sense?

It does make sense, though I'll have to play with it as I'm not sure how to do that off the top of my head. Thanks for the replies. Part of the problem seems to be if I clip too much of the black when I'm in matte mode.

You seem to have a subtle key spill problem. I have never encountered this before, but my intuition would be to use a temporal noise reduction filter in avisynth, if getting a better key is impossible (always the first choice, of course).

is he doing much moving in this shot?
if hes not you could mask around the coat on a second layer
with no key on it and allow that layer to be on top. dont go right
out to the edge with the mask and add a little feather.
devons suggestion could work well too.
