Avid DNxHD is First Codec Compliant with SMPTE VC-3

Avid DNxHD is First Codec Compliant with SMPTE VC-3
Feb 13th, 2008
Avid announced today that Avid DNxHD, a high-quality, low bitrate HD production codec, is the first codec compliant with the new SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) VC-3 standards. The Avid DNxHD codec was approved after a two-year testing and validation process. VC-3 standards enable content creators to facilitate efficient encoding and exchange of HD media, and are the first SMPTE standards for intra-frame, 720/1080 raster, 8/10 bit and 4:2:2 HD post production.
The significance of this announcement is that the DNxHD codec must be licensed on fair and equitable terms to all. This announcement, coupled with the recent support of alpha channels in the DNxHD codec, makes this even more attractive for HD post-production workflows.

This is good news, glad to hear. I have no qualms with the similar Apple ProRes 422 codec, and trust the DNxHD codec at the higher data rates. The less-lossy the codec, the better, and being a standard hopefully it's support will widen even more.

Does anyone know if VC-3 is square or rectangular (anamorphic) pixels? I.e. 1920 or 1440 pixels wide? Thanks.
