Photoshop style editing of video!
Video tech uses photos to enhance, alter shots: it's the Photoshop of video, and no one is safe - Engadget
Absolutely incredible how this stuff is being done. Not only is the way that objects can be removed from video, stabilised, re-exposed etc amazing, but I wonder how long before this technology is used widespread for upconverting SD footage to indistinguishable HD or even 4k! |
This is some star trek stuff right here...
The main guy seems to be Pravin Baht and he is working with a few other grad students... I found his web site for this project, here you can find the paper, the source code and a few supplementary videos... Using Photographs to Enhance Videos of a Static Scene Here is the Baht's website https://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/pro/ has links to some of the other projects he's working on ... |
Whoah! That looks like very promising technology indeed...

So when do we get it on our home PCs?
|
Simon, that's definitely amazing stuff but please don't let producers find out. They'll have me shooting stills too to back up my video. I'll just keep shooting properly exposed, correctly white balanced, in focus video if that's ok.
|
I remember watching this same video on the researchers site almost two years ago, it's highly unlikely that this will reach the home user any time soon, I suspect creating those few clips took a lot of work.

How about a camera that takes intermittent STILLS that does it in-camera in the "background", something like reference still-shots. These get captured as part of the upload and get knitted-into the final mix. What this means is that the video stream is ONLY a framework on which to hold the movement and colour and dynamic. Thanks Simon. This has just so much further future creative opportunities that it is making my brain cells swim - Amazing! Grazie |
This stuff has been around for at least 2-3 years now; I've first seen it on some Russian websites.

I love these new board URLs; they've got words in 'em, is that neat or what? Ooh! When I just clicked Preview Post I see that those links are automatically turned into text matching the name of the thread being linked to. Fancy. |
Well at first I went "wow", then when they showed the object removal bit I went "WOW!"

There's a Microsoft Demo of similar type stuff over at FreshDV: Compositing Coming to Windows Movie Maker? at FreshDV
Digression: Chris - The new URL to words thing-o is wicked, love it. |
