I will be on a panel talking about the latest trends in documentary filmmaking on Wednesday morning, July 14th. Come by and say hi.

Jesse Bekas July 6th, 2004 12:27 PM

I registered for the Expo, but never got any receipt of registration or ticket or anything. How do you get in? Do they just keep a list of names?

Michael Struthers July 6th, 2004 03:50 PM

I would say the biggest trend is that it is now seen as a possible revenue source by the studios.

Boston area carpool to NYC?

Yes and no. Just because a celebrity like Michael Moore has a hit doesn't mean there's a new trend. However, perhaps his success combined with the improving economy will make distributors and exhibitors more receptive.

Jesse Bekas July 7th, 2004 11:21 AM

...and after you've registered, you get in how?...

Michael Wisniewski July 7th, 2004 01:05 PM

You should get a pass in the mail.

Or you can print out your online receipt and bring it to the show, they can make a pass for you there.

* You should have received an email with a link to your receipt.

Don't forget "Super Size Me" that came out earlier this year. I agree that just because Michael Moore has come out with two hit documentaries doesn't mean that it is an immediate trend, but the numbers sure are tempting:

Budget: 300,000 - Gross: 9,000,000

This is making a bigger percent return than Spiderman 2 and other crappy summer blockbusters. The initial cost to a studio for a documentary is peanuts compared to the now 90 million dollar average cost. Maybe we will see more of a move towards these new edgy and topical documentaries.

contact dv expo re: registration confirmation!

Hi all - I think from talking to some people that there have been mixups with registration - the channel I work for here in Toronto registered as press over a month ago and after receiving initial acknowledgement email saying confirmation of registration would come soon, it never did. We bugged them and they sent an email with a link that resulted in "invalid user id" being displayed. We called again and got finally a direct email from a staff member with confirmation details. So if this is the way it's being going for the press passes...

Hi Chris,

I'll be going into Manhattan on Saturday. Just wanted to remind you that Amtrak goes straight to Penn Station in Manhattan from South Station in Boston. That's how I will be going, why drive when you can sit in business class with a lot of room to move about and watch a DVD while chomping down on a scrumptious cheesburger from the cafe car? Penn Station is within walking distance from the Javitz, so you probably wouldn't need a car once your in town. Easier to deal with cabs than it is with expensive parking. The Acela Express is even faster. When you are in business class, you also get your own AC outlet to plug your laptop into.

Just thought I'd mention that. Make sure you stop by the booth and say hello.

Don, you make the Boston-NYC rail commute sound so attractive that it tempts me to fly to Boston just to take the train to NYC.

Jesse Bekas July 7th, 2004 10:18 PM

Didn't originally see this in my online receipt...

Advance Badge Mailing:
In late June, badges will be mailed to all NY, NJ and CT based registrants who pre-registered by June 18, 2004. Badges for those who pre-register after this date must be collected on-site. International registrants and registrants from states not noted above will need to collect their badges on-site, as they will not be mailed in advance of the event.

...Guess I have to collect my badge on site.

Michael Wisniewski July 8th, 2004 05:44 PM

Just curious Chris, what is the main market for documentaries? Is it in the PBS/Discovery/History type channels or something else?

See you at the Expo!
