Yeah. Several mainstream hollywood movies have been shot on Red, but this will likely be among the biggest (if not the biggest) movie of the year when it comes out.

Exciting things Red is doing. hopefully they can finally release theyre over-anticipated Epic and Scarlet cameras before they "major announcement" themselves into a hole.

Wow, i didnt realize that peter Jackson was taking the reigns as director after Del Torro left. It was dissapointing to see Del Torro off the movie, but who better to replace him than the Man himself?

Well, RED has stated that they're gearing themselves more for high-end professionals, and you can't get more high-end than The Hobbit movies.

Yes, seeing Del Toro leave was sad (though I'm pumped for his 3D "At The Mountains of Madness" film), but this is Peter Jackson we're talking about, and he's no slouch (grin).

Then of course realized how jaded that was and of course... Peter Jackson... so it'll look great.

And actually.... kind of excited that there will finally be a 3D movie that will be worth watching at home on a 3DTV too (and maybe by the time it comes out I'll have one).

I'm with you on that, Dylan. Aside from Avatar's lush visuals (and rather weak story, for me at least), I'm hoping for a wonderful 3D film, all around.

I have faith that PJ and his crew will knock it out of the park with the RED 3D.

Pirates of the Carribean 4 is also being shot completely on normal RED MX camera's, so that's a high profile movie too.

But nice to hear this news. Probably very good marketing-wise for RED too.

That's right, I'd heard about Pirates 4 being shot on the RED. I think it's going to be impressive. Btw, some more info on The Hobbit:

What The Hobbit means to me, as it relates to RED goes, is that we're going to get to see this great new digital tech that RED is rolling out pushed to it's limits by TRUE masters of the form.

We've seen lots of (gorgeous) movies shot on Red, but nothing truly EPIC (the actual definition lol). this is about as big as it gets as far as the word epic is concerned.

Want to talk lush visuals? Peter Jackson should remake Dead Alive in 3D. That would teach Cameron...

Yes, I agree! After Frighteners, he said he wanted to do a splatter movie involving CGI.

It's interesting that they're using 30 RED Epics; I wonder if RED is outfitting them for 3D, or if PJ and his crew are just going to make 15 total RED 3D cameras with the help of RED.

If you read about this technology, its pretty interesting. Its not HDR with taking two separate frames and combining them, it sounds like they are actually extracting the extended range out of the same frame. They showed test where they have footage in a barn where both the exterior and interior exposures are perfect without additional lighting.

I think PJ will do an excellent job with The Hobbit. Does anyone know why Del Toro is no longer directing?

Schedule problems. The hobbit was keeping getting delays, and Del Toro had his own other projects too and gave up but wanted to start working to those other projects again.

All the delays were related to MGM's bankruptcy. It's also delayed the next James Bond film, Darren Aronofsky's RoboCop re-do, The 3 Stooges movie and more. Things got better:
