Hi Michael,

Actually, Quick Sync will only work with the built-in GPU; so, it cannot work if there is a discrete GPU such as the ATI. The only workaround I have seen is Lucidlogix's Virtu which is a special chip that allows you to switch back and forth between the GPU built into the CPU or the discrete GPU.

Here is an article discussing Virtu and testing it with QS.

Hi Steve, it looks like the LucidLogix Virtu is just software, correct me if I'm wrong. but it looks like just a "software issue" - I'm assuming this bodes well for the new Sandy Bridge iMacs, and us being able to use both video GPUs at the same time.

Whether or not we have access to both GPUs at the same time, I think most of use video editors will be most interested in using the Sandy Bridge Intel GPU for encoding/decoding.

A pity about that, but OWC has some great deals on the RAM (about $200 to pimp a new iMac out to 16 GB)

OWC 1333DDR3S16S 16.0GB (4x4.0GB Kit) PC3-10600... in stock at OWC

From looking at Apple's website and others, self-installing the RAM on the new iMac still looks to be a piece of cake.
