All you need to participate is a light meter, tape measure, and a way to run an iOS (iPhone) or Android app for submitting the data.

As co-chairman of CEA's R4 WG13 (Energy Efficiency) standardization group, I've been spearheading this effort. We hope to get thousands of submissions from all CEDIA countries, including the US, UK, Netherlands, France, Germany, Korea, and Japan. This is the first such study of its kind.

The goal is to characterize the typical light levels that affect the Automatic Brightness Control feature in TVs. This has a large effect on television energy consumption. We plan to update our existing TV power measurement standard (CEA-2037) to take this into full account. The US Department of Energy (DOE), US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA - stewards of the Energy Star program), and various national and international entities are all awaiting this real-world data.

BTW, you can get a viable lux meter for only $15.


A friend of mine involved in this study bought the meter above, compared it with his pro meter, and found it to track reasonably well. Note that if you divide lux by ten, you get ft-candles. So you can use this meter in setting levels, checking ratios, etc.

Not a bad purchase for $15.

And, no, I don't have any business relationship with that meter company, nor the seller. :)
