Best Cinematography Oscar goes to a full digital production

For the first time in history, the first full length feature shot entirely with digital media has won Best Cinematography - "Hugo." It was shot with Arri Alexas.
According to Arri, Avatar and Slumdog Millionaire used some film in their productions. Would that have ben the opening sequence of Avatar?

That a video camera would be used by such an old-skool director on such an expensive film ($200 mil) would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.

Perhaps this is the last nail in the coffin for film - if not a shovel full of dirt.

A lot is to do with 3D, it's a much more complex business shooting this with film. I'm not sure Martin Scorsese is what you'd term an old school director, he's one of the independent types.

The death of film is another matter, it can depend on the look required for a production and if they've got the budget. "The Dark Knight Rises" is shot on 65mm IMAX, 35mm and straight 65mm.

I protest!

Both Hugo and The Artist could not have been shot without film - as props!

I fear that someday, the bits and bytes used to film Hugo will be recycled into women's shoes...
