Quick overview and specs: Canon G1X Mark II 1.5" sensor, a RX10 killer? yes and no?

it is indeed a 1.5" sensor point and shoot, with a lens that isn't quite as impressive as the rx10, but who knows, might be a killer, might be more targeted at rx100 market

Almost as large as the APS-C CMOS sensor found in many EOS digital SLRs, and bigger than those found in 4/3 system cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II's sensor sets the standard for sensitivity and resolving power in compact cameras. Each cell area is 4.5x the size of those found in 1/1.7 type sensors and is thus able to capture more light at the pixel level. This means better detail, even at higher ISOs, with minimal noise and distortion and, thanks to the sensor's wide cell pitch, breathtaking dynamic range. The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera natively captures images in the 3:2 aspect ratio, which is the same as Canon EOS SLR cameras. The PowerShot G1 X Mark II also features a new Aspect Ratio function, enabling RAW image capturein both 3:2 and 4:3 aspect ratios while maintaining the same angle of view.

Can't see why this is compared with the rx10, looks like a totally different camera to me. It would have been better to directly compare it with the rx100 instead.

You can compare it to whatever you like.

I see some elements comparing with the rx100, some with the rx10, meanwhile the marketing literature is pushing its performance as similar to DSLRS

What similarities does it have with the rx10, beside the fact that both have fixed lenses? The rx10 has manual functionality that rivals a videocamera's making it a very simple to operate under run and gun situations. Even the build in microphone is very good and records a lot better quality audio then any dslr can, build in manual nd filter, iris and focus ring on the lens, constant f2.8 lens and can record in 50p just to name a few of it's main advantages, does the gx1 share anything similar?

Sure you can compare with anything but you said they might be targeting the rx10 market, as the rx10 is twice as big it's a totally different camera, if you would have said "rx100 market" as they share the same formfactor, then I would agree.

That has a 1.5" sensor in the same sense that I have a 14" ----.

It's about the girth, not the diagonal. 18mm +14mm = 1.25 inches. Round up for ego and you get 1.5. There you go.

That's a pretty "silly" headline... clearly meant to sensationalize ("killer"), but just makes the writer look foolish...

I'd buy that it might give some competition to the RX100/100M2... depending on the price, but a completely different animal from the RX10, which may stand alone for quite some time...

hi all,

in 2/3 camcorders the sensor is 9.6 X 5.4 mm = .75 (real diagonal is 11 mm)
an 1.5 sensor is 4 time the 2/3 sensor, about 18.7 x 12.5 (real diagonal is about 22.5 mm)
