Archival optical disk

Sony and Panasonic have announced that they're working together to develop the next generation of optical disks for archiving.

I'm interested in this as I archive all my footage offsite at two banks using hdd's and blurays. My gut though tells me it will have silly pricing and that I'll end up not using it at all, but I guess I'll have to wait and see. Given how much they charge for bdxl blank discs though I'm definitely not hopeful.

I am interested in this too. Although burn times could be long and the cost of course..

I'm interested as to how it would compare, cost wise to LTO tapes.

That is what my office is using now, read / write times are fairly slow, but not horrible. Tapes are pretty cheap & very reliable. Biggest downside is the hardware costs up front & hardware maintenance.

I think the question is can optical be a better solution than flash memory, as flash memory is getting cheaper & cheaper by the day.
