Panasonic to market its 103" LCD screen
 

This is something every home needs.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. (6752.T), the maker of Panasonic brand electronics, said on Monday it hoped to start selling the world's largest plasma television by early next year.

Measuring 2.4 metres by 1.4 meters and weighing 215 kg, the 103-inch panel is bigger than a double-sized mattress and almost as heavy as an upright piano.

I heard about this and don't see the point for most people: for what it will cost you could build your own home theater room with a nice HD projector, remote-controlled pull down screen, HD disc player, plush viewing chairs and maybe even a popcorn machine. Sounds like the manufacturers are trying to prove something to each other...

I can't imagine how much that thing weighs.

I had an interesting experience helping to move a plasma screen to a trade show--that 42" screen felt like a concrete slab....and you definitely don't want to jostle or drop it.

How much would a 102" screen weigh?

According to the article, 215 kilograms (about 430 pounds)!

I saw some where it the price was 50,000 dollars (i dunno if i buy this tho)

I'm sure I will see it on MTV's Cribs soon enough. If that show is even still on. I do not watch MTV anymore since I cannot get it in HD. I'm sure some celeb on the show will have one of these hanging on the wall in the bedroom.

There isn't any point for most people.... have you ever heard the expression "if you have to ask how much it costs then you can't afford it?" ;-) It's the kind of thing that very rich people might buy on an impulse however... I'm sure Thomas is right. Probably also something to impress your big clients with in a boardroom.

Yes, those plasma screens are heavier than they look! I have a 37" Panasonic; according to the manual it weighs 67 pounds, and the 42" model weighs 79 pounds.

490 lbs, eh? Hmmmm, would it take one or two screws to hang that on the wall? Not sure.

Well, that's the dilemma. If you've got the space for such a big TV, then you may as well go projector. But if you don't have the means for a projector, then a big TV would be great. Also, I don't think this product is marketed at the Average Joe, this would be for the people you see in Electronic House magazine or, as many have said, company advertisement display.

Heck, spend a few extra thousand dollars past the $100,000 mark and you can have a 4K projector from Sony.
