Sony PS3 update 1.80
 

Sony announced this upgrade to the PS3 today as version 1.80

In the menu it says the PS3 now supports 1080 24P ???

What exactly does this imply??

Also of note, the update also allows the PS3 to be networked with PC's...

So now we can play our HD footage that is stored on the PC thru the networked PS3 ???

This update has almost every single thing that people wanted since the PS3 came out including DVD upscaling, 1080p movies downscaling to 720p for people without a 1080p TV and 24p output.

Some of the extra stuff includes:

Upscaling of PS1/ PS2 games
You can view videos, photos, and music from your PS3 to the PSP anywhere around the world with a broadband connection
You can hook up an Epson printer to make photographs
You’re also allowed to trim photographs
The ability to view media content from your computer to your PS3. It may not be perfect
xvYCC support. A lot of the new TVs from Samsung are already 1.3 compliant. –This is perfect if you have a Sony HC7 or other Sony camcorders with x.v.color

What I wish it could have had was DIVX, QuickTime and WMV support. Politics aside, Sony should at least try to support one of them, if not all.

Still, this is the biggest update the PS3 ever had and a lot of users are celebrating.

It basically means that if you have a TV that can handle it, you will almost get a perfect replicate of the original film when you set the PS3 to 24p.

I don’t know that much about DLNA

Sony shipped about 5.5 million units and around 3.5 million units are in people’s homes. If this update was released much earlier then I bet the number of units in people’s homes would have been very close to the number of units shipped. That’s how big of an update this is.

Just like Toshiba is about to have a huge HD-DVD advertising campaign, Sony is going to be doing the same thing to their PS3 and if they want to do it properly, they would include compatibility with AVCHD/HDV camcorders, the ability to go online, watch Blu-Ray movies, play videogames, view media content from the hard drive, use the PSP to view media content from the PS3 and show that you are able to stream media content from your computer onto your PS3. That a lot and it’s probably only possible in at least 3 commercials but if you can somehow fit all of that in 30 seconds, the impact would be huge. A simpler way is making a 1:30 to 2:00 minute commercial to show in a movie theater and Sony could also put that commercial in some of their hottest DVD releases.

By the way, if any of you didn’t know yet, their will be a Metal Gear Solid movie and you can only imagine how much PS3 advertisement their will be within the film.

I do believe most DVDs (SD, HD and Blu-Ray) are 24p and the player and/or TV adds the pulldown. OR the pulldown is part of the DVD.

I understand what you mean about the pull down but I was really talking about TVs that has 72Hz and 120Hz that are better built for 24p content.

It’s informative but there are some things I don’t agree with. The PS3 is obviously not as good as the Samsung BD-P1200 but its better than some other Blu-Ray players. The new Panasonic player is 600 not 500 dollars. Also the PS3 does have good games for example Resistance, Oblivion, Motor Storm and Virtua Fighter 5. Before this year is over you will see Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet and Clank, Kill Zone, Lair, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Assassin’s Creed, Sega Rally Revo, Devil May Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto IV Uncharted and Stranglehold that includes an HD version of Hard Boiled plus many others. -That’s just for 2007. 2008 you’ll have a lot more big titles.
I didn’t mean to go overboard but I just needed to get this out of my chest after I watched that video.

One thing I noticed about the first Xbox and the PS2 is that they weren't all that good on DVD movie playback. In fact, it was so bad with digital break-up, that my former roommate and I bought a DVD player so we could watch movies. (We had two PS2s and an Xbox and the DVD movies we'd try to watch got screwed up on all 3.)

I wonder if that's happening with the PS3...

I bought the PS2 around 1 week after release and had problems as well. About 40% of the DVDs I bought didn’t play properly and it wasn’t just only a few systems being defective, I think the number is somewhere in the ballpark of 30% of all PS2s were defective. At least Sony took care of its customers because after about 2 weeks or so I returned it to Sony and it took them only a week to send it back fixed and as a courtesy they gave me an extra AV plug and a game pad. It was bad enough that Sony spent a lot of money fixing all those defective PS2s but being extra generous and giving away free game pads is really something. As for my XBOX, I never had any problems.

Before the Samsung BD-P1200 came out, the top Blu-Ray player was the Pioneer and the PS3’s picture quality was very close. Its already been proven in many websites that the PS3 is one of the best Blu-Ray players that you can get and because of the latest firmware update, its one of the best DVD players as well.

With all the stuff you can do with the PS3, its worth 1,000 dollars but even 600 dollars is a lot of money for your average consumer and I hope by the end of this year Sony lowers the price by at least 100 dollars. I swear, this update is tempting me to get a PS3 even more now but 600 dollars would break me.

I'm with you there; for $600, I can buy quite a few things, like pay bills, or a DSLR.

Unfortunately the smaller hdd version has been discontinued. It is so easy to replace the hard drive and there was no other difference for $100
