Color correct. for the Web & LCD Monitors
 

I'm needing to upgrade my monitor. The old Hitachi CRT is on it's last legs and it's just a matter of time--every once in a while the entire screen image will shudder as though the monitor got a chill. I'm seriously thinking about investing in an LCD monitor.

Of the few I've seen, there's only one that has really impressed me so far. Rather than say which one, I'd rather hear from those of you who are using LCDs and get your input and suggestions--pro and con. (I'm not looking to start a debate or argument on who has the best monitor. I'm just looking for, as much as possible, objective information based on user experience.)

With the Hitachi, I've found that I can use the Preview Window in Vegas 4.0 for color correction for the Web with very little or no variation when compressed using Sorenson Squeeze 3 and viewed with QuickTime or Windows Media (although I use a PC, I've found that I prefer the look of video in QuickTime).

I was not asking about monitors to put on cameras or jib arms. I was asking about --desktop-- monitors, as those used for viewing the output from computers. I did a search and didn't find anything that answered my question, hence the post.

I haven't looked at much desktop LCD monitors myself yet since
they all have low resolution capability only (anything below
1400x1050 is too low for video work with my taste). Which is very
strange since I'm currently typing this message on a DELL laptop
with a 15.1" screen attached that is running 1400x1050. And I
must add, quite nice as well.

The best LCD screens I have seen are the Apple (widescreen)
ones. Now these don't fit on a PC but perhaps there are already
devices/cables or other solutions to "fix" this problem (I can't
imagine there aren't any). These LCD screens are made for
movie work so are very good (and expensive).

I have gathered a bit of information on both types of LCDs--those for PCs and Macs. Based on the specifications alone, trying to compare apples to apples (no pun intended), it would appear that there are many comparable monitors out there to the Apple's--some even surpassing them, and at a slightly lower cost, too.

Be that as it may, based on further investigation, it looks as though CRTs still provide the superior picture. The only apparent downfall of the CRT is the dreaded "flicker."

Flicker? Are you talking about "low" response time in the LCD
matrix? (ie, you see ghosting??)... With never models this should
be barely visible anymore... I have zero problems with such things
on my DELL LCD screen here.

<smile> Rob, you'd better hit the sack, bud. The flicker I mentioned was referring to the CRT (picture tube), not the LCD (flat screen).

Hehehehe... That might be best indeed. Have worked too much
lately. I'll leave this thread alone now for at least 12 hours.

And yes, I know of CRT flickering <grin>....

since im poor, i recently ( JAN) got a MAG 17 LCD, and i have been pretty happy with it (ended up being less than $400 after rebate from best buy. I have been pretty happy with it, but i havent done any kind of color correction with it. I will say that it i doubt this model has great color, but i dont even know how to properly adjust the color (on momitor or tv). im not quite that advanced yet...after getting a compaq laptop for vid editing last year, i fell in love with the LCD look though, it puts alot less strain on my eyes and text is much clearer (my .02). I could have gotten a 21in. CRT, or even 2 19 CRTs, but i opted for a 17 LCD. also, i use multiple monitors and ive always had probs with having two CRTs next too each other (slight flicker in display). You have a hitachi now, i would imagine their LCDs are probably just as nice as their CRTs....if you like that display.
