Sharpening old photos

Often it's necessary to use old b and w photos in a documentary, and
if they are old enough, the originals may not exist. So you are stuck
with newspaper or magazine photos. Is there some favorite software
that can clean up and sharpen these better than the usual Photoshop tools?
