Documentary training? Books, etc.

Hi all,

Can anyone please recommend any good books on documentary & reality style filmmaking?

I was thinking of buying "Making Documentary & Reality Films" by Barry Hempe & maybe "Writing, Directing & Producing Documentary Films" By Alan Rosenthal. Can anybody recommend these titles or any other books?

Also are there any good online documentaries or DVD's to watch?

Thanks!

"Making Documentary & Reality Films" is really good, I have that one.

If you're going to only buy one, I recommend Directing the Documentary by Michael Rabiger

I have both Rabiger's and Hempe's books. After helping out on two local documentaries, I prefer Rabiger's book. It's much more detailed and comprehensive. I find myself referring to it more as time passes, even for non-documentary projects.

The two books do compliment each other, because of their different styles. Rabiger's book is a text book written by a talented film teacher. In comparison, Hempe's book is more of a series of anecdotal lessons from the field.

OTOH, Hampe's book is a good, easy to read overview. I didn't fall asleep once. I like to start easy when learning a new topic.

Documentary training??????

Hello,

I decided to improve my knowlegde on documentary, read some books and I work already as a tv(VJ) journalist for a long time. But I want to put some emphazise on documentary and therefore I am looking for a one or two weeks course (planning, structure but no basic cam or editing introduction) in USA or Europe. Anyone can recommend a course?

Markus

Documentary Dvd Training

Hi
I am currently teaching 'documentary making' at University level.
Is there anyone who knows about a dvd course about 'documentary making'?
I am looking for something like 'action-cut filmmaking' dvd course, but focused in the documentary environment. I think it will be very helpful for improving my current teaching style.
Thanks in advance.
