Documentary Filmmaker Albert Maysles to be Honored

Documentary Film "dean" to be honored by the Academy:

If you haven't seen Albert Maysles films, old and new, make a point to check them out. Gimmie Shelter, Salesman, Monterey Pop, etc., etc.

Good Catch

L.A. members should attend this ceremony which is open to the public - only $5/person and $3/student ! Too bad I'm on the other coast.
Gimmie Shelter was shot in 16mm. There's a shot in the film where you can see a Spectra light meter attached to the camera so David/Albert could set his lens stop.
Classic.

The Maysles brothers brought us "cinema verite," where they'd let the camera simply roll for 6, 8, 10 minutes straight. And those long shots would then end up in the film! I think it was a credible way of trying to obtain the "truth" of the situation, given that the mere presence of film crews changes reality/truth before one frame is shot. But again, to their credit, they worked with minimal crews, high speed film and no lights when possible. Those were the days....and those were the brothers.
