SPAM from dvinfo.net?
 

i've received several emails titled "Canon XL1 users", to an email address that's only used for dvinfo.net... i don't know if the sender is a dvinfo.net vendor? or is he harvesting email addresses off of this site?

Thanks for the heads-up, Dan. This should not be happening; the sender is indeed harvesting email addresses and we hold that practice to be in extremely poor taste. Can you tell me how recently you've received the latest one? Has it been within the last 24 hours, a few days ago, or a few weeks ago?

EDIT: hold the phone, i think this guy is using a really old email address from out here before... "xl1watchdog" would have maybe been back from when i was registered under a pseudo-name out here, before you dis-allowed that sort of thing.

either way, that email address would have been exclusive to your xl1 site... bizarre, at least he's not harvesting current email addresses! sorry for the confusion, please delete this thread if it's not relevant.

i got one on 4/25, at 10:13 p.m., then on 4/28 at 11:07 a.m.

here is some of the header info, it looks like the poor guy is using his cable network for both sending spam and hosting his website, i edited out my email address:

Many thanks, Dan... we have *never* condoned this spamming technique and I called the guy on the carpet about it back when it first happened. He made a commitment never to do it again, so if anybody recently received anything remotely similar, I really need to know about it.

I'm a pretty new user and have never posted anything to the forum and I received the SPAM as well. I use an email address exclusively reserved for this site. He obviously harvested emails from the member list which would require a lot of clicking, copying, and pasting, or a nice little script. Anyway I replied with a complaint to the sender of the email a few hours ago and CCed it to the moderators.

You should not reply to a spammer. By doing this, you confirm to the spammer that your email address is a valid one.

I've placed announcements in our XL1 / XL1S message boards urging a boycott of the product this individual is hawking. Let's show him that spamming our community is a counter-productive waste of time.

I replied to the spammer to make him crap his pants for not realizing that some people use email addresses specifically for this forum. He thought he could steal dvinfo's database of emails for his own personal gain without anyone knowing but he was wrong. Now he's reported. I don't care if he knows that the email address of mine he SPAMMED is a valid email address. The email address is easily replaceable. I don't need to send out an email to my friends that I'm changing my email address because of SPAM because nobody emails to this address. There's a reason that I use a unique email address and it's for reasons like this. It's so I can track where people are getting my email address from and protect my personal email address from SPAM.
