Now link to specific posts within a thread

I have found it useful to point to a specific post within a thread instead of having users search the whole thing for what is being referred to. I'm sure the admins of this board can easily do this with their tools and special access but here is a way for us regular folks to do it.

1. Locate the post within a thread that you want to directly link to

2. To extract the post ID, click on any button or link for that post such as edit, quote, report this thread, etc.. The post ID will be shown at the end of the URL (this can be done without being logged in as well).

3. Once you have the post ID, go back and copy the original URL of the entire thread and simply replace the ending, after the "&" symbol with the following: postid=xxxxxx#postxxxxxx

4. Finally, copy this entirely new URL with the post ID included into your hotlink and users will now be able to link directly to a post anywhere within a thread.

NEATO!!

Also, regarding links... here's how to make 'em "hot" (that is, clickable):

Add brackets containing url and /url at either end of the link...

[ url ] link goes here [ /url ]

Don't use spaces like I did... those are in there just for clarity. Hope this helps,

Chris, that reminds me of something I couldn't figure out. I've seen links which are just a word-in-syntax; i.e., rather than appearing as:

http://www.dvinfo.net/whatever

the link will be a logical word in a sentence such as: "If you wanna know about that, look here."

... and the word "here" is underlined--a hyperlink. Click on "here" (or whatever word the writer uses) & the link activates.

How dey do dat?

[url= http://www.dvinfo.net/whatever]How Dey Do Dat?[ /url]

with spaces removed.

You know, I'm staring at that and thinking "I could've thought of that" ...

Thanks, Ken.

Ken's trick a few posts up should to be added to the vB code page in FAQ. I've been posting really long url links because I've completely forgot all the html coding I ever knew since the advent of WYSIWYG editing. Ken produces another Homer Simpson "Doh!" moment for me.

Post Numbers

Well, I think it's gotten even simpler now with this new board. I have now discovered that if you click on the post number at the top right of a post, a new window will open that isolates that post. Just copy that new URL to send specific posts links within a thread. Neato!!!
