DVC/UWOL 2013 - The search for inspiration - by Trond Saetre

As often before, I only had a few days available to shoot my film.
Up to the mountains I headed, to find the inspiration.
What makes people go skiing in the mountains not only in bright sunny weather, but also in snow storms?
Personally I very much enjoy this, but why? Could I find out?
Being sick with a nasty cold and still have the fever, I couldn't let that stop me. This narrowed everything down to only one day of filming, causing the story and variety of shots to become a bit more limited than planned.

Hope you enjoy, and I look forward to any feedback.

Way to brave the elements with a nasty cold, Trond! I enjoyed you taking us along on the trek to find inspiration. My very favorite part? That great smile at the end!!

That was a tough gig Trond. It was good to see what a real winter can be like, we don't have them in Perth. I think many would agree with you that just being out in nature is inspiring.

I liked the film, but thought that some of the exposures were a bit under. What was it filmed on?

Trond, I always enjoy watching your films that are usually filmed in the wilderness, and wish you would make one each month. Looks like your land is freezing cold, but you and the dog are happy. It's amazing that the camera works in that weather and that you can push the buttons!

Lorinda,
The smile is always installed and brightens the days :)

Tim,
I use the Canon XF300. Yes I know some parts were under exposed. Simple reason: I forgot to change from auto to manual aperture. Corrected a little bit in post, but obviously not enough.
Also noticed that both vimeo and youtube made some shots (the dog) a tiny bit darker than the original file.

Bill,
The camera always have "summer conditions". When the temperature is less than 2-3C (around 36F), I always use a Portabrace "polar mitten" heat cover. Keeps my hands warm too.

Hey Trond, out in those conditions with a cold, I reckon I would forget too. I noticed vimeo made some of my shots a wee bit darker too. Nice that your hands are kept warm though.

Trond, it gives a really good sense of venturing into the wilderness. As a cross country skier I love just being able to venture places that few other people go, seeing new things out in nature. It is inspiring, wish I had been bale to ski more the winter just gone. It's also refreshing to see snow - we're having our 4th day in a row of 40C, in a colder than average summer - so it's like a mini heat wave here, and thinking about cold things is good.
Shooting in snow is tricky, the exposure control wants to keep total light to a certain value - is there a backlight setting? I know on the sony PD150 there is a backlight and spotlight option to over and under expose. But even that might not be enough.

Thanks for sharing, makes me want to go out and see more of nature. But not today - need to stay home in case we get bushfires nearby.

Hi Andrew, thank you for the comments.
40 degrees is more than enough. I think I prefer the cold over your heat wave.
Hope there won't be any bush fires in your area.

Trond,

Very beautiful footage. It reminded me of growing up in Germany. Skis were not just for recreation, but also transportation; It is funny how many of us struggled with the inspiration theme. I think we were all searching for inspiration, and you made your quest visually beautiful. Love to see entries with the filmmakers. Nice to know what our friends look like!

Thank you for the comments, Dick!
Much appreciated.

Struggling with the theme, makes these challenges extra fun.
I can't wait for the next one.
