How close are we to dual layer DVD burner?

Hi,

Anyone have any idea when the consumer will be able to buy a dual layer DVD burner?

Thanks!

Here are some good reads:

I heard reports around the summer, but at least somewhere
this year.

I don't think that software will burn dual-layer DVD, in fact I think
it is a lie. I think they are saying that it will convert your
dual-layer DVD's to multiple CD's [with great quality loss I might
add!]

Hey, thanks everyone for posting. It looks like the first DVD burners that record true dual-layer for consumers will be here in a few months.

Sony looks like the one who's doing it first...cool!

Thanks!!

Ulead Workshop 2 not yet released is said to support dual layer recording when the hardware is available.

Rob Lohman January 7th, 2004 11:35 AM

Personally I only "trust" Nero to do the job and they've always
had a version ready for new burners, so it'll probably be the
same in this case. Getting the media to burn on is probably gonna
be the issue at hand when the burners will be available.

DVD SP 2 has the option to do a dual layer. I have yet to try it to settle this issuse if software can do it I will go get a dual layer DVD and try a burn.

I believe the dual layer option in DVD SP is for DLT masters.

Rob Lohman January 7th, 2004 12:46 PM

That's for DLT output indeed, not for DVD burners.

Sharon Fraats January 7th, 2004 12:51 PM

You are right as to DLT however with a DVD 10 could one not record dual?

Jeff Donald January 7th, 2004 12:59 PM

I believe in DVD SP it sets a flag on the DLT tape so that the masters can be pressed correctly. Burning a double sided disk would need two asset folders, one audio and video for each side of the DVD 10. I've not burned DVD 10's from DVD SP, but that is my understanding.

The question is not if it can but how using DVD9 there are problems with DVD SP 2 as mentioned in the following

Jeff Donald January 7th, 2004 03:31 PM

With DVD SP 2.0.3 a function of the flag was amended to be a pause, as outlined in the Apple Knowledge Base Article you referenced. The pause default was added to increase compatibility in playing DVD-9 discs. This update is relatively new and I haven't talked to anyone who has had a DVD-9 made since the update release, to know if it fixed the prior incompatability.

Sharon,

I doubt the current feature will work as is with the new burners,
why? Because support for new burners (and especially new major
features!) must be added to the product. The way a dual layer
DVD will be burned is radically different from the way a dual layer
IMAGE is written to a DLT tape.

That being said, let's just wait for the burners & media to appear
on the market and I'm sure you will hear from the major software
manufacturers if it is supported and if not how long it will take
them.
