VHS to DVD copy

A friend of mine got a problem when trying to copy his SVHS tapes to DVD. The audio apparently (I didn't hear it yet) goes up and down (interference?) as soon as the Y/C cable is being connected. He tried two JVC SVHS VCR's on the Philips DVDR1000 DVD recorder with the same audio problem as a result. Did anybody encountered such problems?

These are commercial VHSs, right? That's probably Macrovision trying to stop him.

Thx Peter, but it was his own edited footage from his old SVHS cam.
