Any thoughts about which DVD burner to purchase?
 

I'm getting my computer ready to do digital video capturing, editing and rendering.

I currently use Sonic Foundry's Vegas Video 3. So far, so good with regards to this program.

I want to purcahse a DVD burner. Currently, I'm eyeing Sony's DRX-500UL because it records on DVD+RW/+R and DVD-RW/R media. Any comments about this particular device?

What do you use as a DVD burner and why?

If you want to play it safe go with the Sony burner, it supports
the most media formats. There are some problems with that
drive and certain media (but is always the case with new stuff)
which should be ironed out by now I think (hope).

Most people that want maximum compatibility go with a Pioneer
DVD burner (it does -R/-RW). Latest model on their line is the A05.

I personally don't have a DVD burner yet but have spoken to
a lot of people who own one.

I am curious about using a DVD burner as a backup device. Does anybody here have any experience with this?

It is just like a normal CD burner in that regard. Only it holds
more data (up to 4.7 GB). I'm planning on getting my own DVD
burner early next year and will definitely be using it as a backup
device (both with rewritable as with write-once media) for all
files that need backupping and especially those large DV files!

Well my PC decided to attempt to bite the dust today. So I am REALLY interested in which DVD recorder is the way to go.

The recording capacity sounds perfect. Any recommendations??

It all depends on preferences and such Paul. If you want industry
standard go with the Pioneer A05. If you want to be able to use
as much formats as possible I suggest you take a look at that
DRU500A.

Thank you for the heads up Rob. I will be looking for the DVD burner this week. I like the idea of being able to burn several different formats.

I recently picked up a DVD burner in the DVD+RW format (it was a Verbatim branded drive - can't figure out the manuf.) My decision was based on the format being compatible with my set top player which is an Apex.

Both formats say they are more compatible. This is based on user feedback of what ACTUALLY works.

I purchased the AO3 when it hit the market and other than upgrading the software it has needed no assistance in producing top quality DVD's VCD's ands SVCD's. It can write on -r -rw CD and DVD. Plus the price is about half of what it was 2 years back.It is a really good piece of equiptment that is well worth the cost.

Wait for the Pioneer A06, it should be out soon and I've heard good things about it.

I'm thinking of editing DV on a laptop and getting an external DVD burner. The new Pioneer A06 looks good, but is internal only. Any advice or caveats about using an external drive adaptor?

Take a look at the Sony DRU-500-AX.

I am VERY satisfied with this product.

Also highly recommended by the major magazines.
