Bought Pinnacle DVD Impression, Need TMPGEnc, AVI 1 to AVI 2?
 

Hi,
I have a fat frustrating problem. I just purchased Pinnacle Impression DVD-Pro and have created an entire menu set all ready to burn to DVD. When I click on the burn button I realize that Impression doesn't include a MPEG encoder so I will need a 3rd party encoder. "No problem" I think, "I will just use the popular and widely respected TMPGEnc encoder." So, I download that and everything works until I try to encode my avi file. When I try to open the file to be encoded, it tells me the format is unsupported. After many hours of confusion, troubleshooting, and research, I figure it out. TMPGE doesn’t work with AVI type 1, which is what my file is because I created it from Premiere 6.0. So now here is my problem: In order to encode my AVIs to MPG, I need a AVI 1 to AVI 2 converter. All the files I create will be in the avi 1 format because I have used Premiere 6 to create them. If I change my export settings in Premiere to out put a "Microsoft AVI" (AVI 2) instead of a normal "Microsoft DV AVI" (AVI 2) it goes extremely slow (between 1-2 days for the file!). So now what I have determined I need is a AVI 1 to 2 converter, but I really would like to not have to spend any more money because I already just bought Pinnacle Impression and I will have to buy TMPGE also when my trial runs out. I thought about exporting my AVI 1 to tape and then importing it back in and it will be AVI 2 but there has to be a simpler way. So after I put you through all that mess, here is my question: Does any one know of:
a) a way around/through my problem?, or if not,
b) a free AVI 1 to AVI 2 converter?

A work around might be to try Pinnacle TRex to convert/encode your files. Never been too impressed with TRex myself but judging its cheep and from the tests i've just done might just solve your problem.

In the tools section at DVDrHelp (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tools) you can find 2 freeware tools that converts Type-1 to Type-2.
