Creating DVD menu for a homemade DVD
 

I was asked to create a menu (scene selection) for a DVD. Problem is the said DVD itself is already finalized (.vob files). In the past what I did was importing it into Vegas, track render to AVI, removing the gaps, put chapter marks and rerender to DVDA video and audio streams, then create the menu in DVDA.

Needless to say it's time consuming and the results will degrade.

Is there a simpler way to do so? Basically what I need is to create a navigational menu (scene selection). No editing for the clips. I am using DVDA 4.

I would use Mpeg Streamclip to export the video stream. Make sure to pick the correct MPEG-2 settings so you don't have to render later on.

Import the video file into your authoring software and do your chapter markers & menus.

I hope you're getting paid for this because it is a pain in the ass to add menus after the fact.

Absolutely no need to worry, MPEG Streamclip will help you out. All you will have to do is run the vob files through it in order to clean them up from the additional stuff and return them to their original mpeg format. Than take these mpeg files and author your DVD with menus as you need.

There are no settings to choose, Streamclip will never re-encode any mpeg file (except if you choose to decompress it to a different format like QT or AVI), all it will do is make it into a multiplexed or demultiplexed mpeg depending on your needs. Use the Demux options if you need to replace the audio or add an additional audio track. Use "Convert to MPEG" if you don't need to change audio.
