Real time laptop recording of DVD complient mpegs

I have an unusual need.

I use a Canon XH A1 to record HDV tapes of events but also output to SD DVD. The quality of the SD DVDs isn't critical. Presently I perform minimal editing in Premiere Pro CS3 and transcode to Encore. I often don't do menus and could skip the editing.

I'd liike to do realtime capture to DVD compliant mpeg on my laptop during the show which means I could import that file into Encore and come up with the DVD in a few minutes - no transcoding.

There are a number of economical USB capture devices which accept composite in and encode to MPEG but none of them clearly state they create DVD compatable mpegs.

Has anyone used a device to create DVD compatable mpegs during capture to a laptop ?

Thanks
Kevin

plextor convert X ...

I use this to record RCA cables or S-video to MBP direct and record in what ever codec is needed. The unit I've used is 2 years old and still going but it's plastic build always worries me.
Does the trick however and has been used in a number of combinations with DSR-11 to DVD recorder to computer recording. You use Eye TV software with this to record. There are other converters out there but this is the one I have.

i have a miglia evolutiontv I use for this. In addition to mpeg2 streams compatible with dvd studio, it also can do hardware encoding to divx.

You on a pc or mac? For pc there are the "instant dvd" boxes aplenty.

Hi Kevin,

Q's

What kind of shows are you recording ?

How long are they ?

How quickly do you need to output the DVD ?

How many DVD's at a time are needed ?

I may have a suggestion - depending on what your're doing & needing.

Hi, I need the same thing.

Here is what I do at the moment. But would like something that looks more professional.

I use the JVC MC 500. This records to .mod files and when sent to nero vision, the conversion is almost instant. It takes me about 5 mins to transfer a 30 min video. about 5 mins to convert and nero vision does all the menus as well and the out put is vobs etc. It takes me another 5 mins or so to burn the dvd. I have a 5 multiple burner so can do 5 dvd's all within 15-20 mins.

If anyone knows of other cameras that can do this, I would greatly appreciate it.

So many cameras say they do mpeg but how close is this to dvd mpeg?

Currently a 5 min .mod file coverts in about 30 secs.

I am looking for a more professional look. Not over the top but something better than a tiny handycam:)

I was about to order the XL-2 with firestore but pulled out last minute cos I could get no answers to whether it could do what I wanted.

Please help :)

P.s the filming I do is mobile in a field and brought back to a PC.
