Capture Appz difference

Hi, this may sound stupid but, I would like to know whats the difference or advantages of using specific capture programs (while shooting live) compared to a NLE. I know that DV Rack for example you can do some tweaks. My main doubt is, is there any danger using a NLE while capturing live (I know it was not build for that in mind, but it works) I did it once for a short period of time, and it worked pretty good. I download the trial of scenalizer wich is cool also. But whats the difference? Is there any risk using a NLE?

I don't think that there is any more risk in using a NLE program to capture to your HDD. It is a matter of ease of use. The programs that are designed just for capturing have a lot of useful (and maybe less useful) functions to help ensure that recording starts quickly when you want it to. Functions like programable key shortcuts for initializing recording.

If you just want to capture DV in a very controlled situation then using a NLE should be just fine. That's my opinion.

Most people just have issues of NLE's taking up unneeded system resources when a smaller, more streamlined app does the same thing. I captured a bunch of stuff on my laptop using Premiere Pro, with no problem. I will admit though it's a lot easier to use something like DV Capture 1.0 or WinDV where you basically have a record button and a monitor and barely anything else.
