Great Idea,
look at all the new HD cameras & their ability to bypass compression.
Note even to use totally Uncompressed, but to Choose your own compression via Cineform/Sheer/DvcProHD

Serge, I have been watching yourProducts for awhile and they lok spectacular!
Unfortunately I would have to see one in action and Price also wants me to convert it into my preexisting Laptop...

I had looked into Shuttle PC's to do this with HD-SDI from my Canon XL-H1 but they dont seem to be able to take a BlackMagic/Kona card
Having a long battery would be great too.

But a Laptop solution for choosing compression would be most useful
Has anyone tried the Magma?

John, i agree with you about choosing Intraframe compression instead of
totally uncompressed solution. Sorry, but I can not imagine low cost portable solution for uncompressed 1080p...
HDV and AVCHD with highly compressed long GOP's, 8 bit 4:2:0 is a choice for consumer market.
Uncompressed 4:4:4 HD/2k/4k for Hollywood Pro's with deep pocket :).
For Indie's need an affordable tapeless cams HD/2k with codec 4:2:2 8/10 bit.
Like SI2K and CineformRAW codec. Captured RAW from CMOS and wavelet compressed 5:1.
Drawback of SI2K is external PC for encoding RAW (coming from smos camera head through GIGe).
But possible any codec implement into FPGA. Look at Elphel Cam: http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=63677
Regards FPGA possible not only encode,but also record straight to SSD/HDD inside camera head...

SI2K and RED cam's is a future:
1. CMOS at least 2/3"
2. Wavelet-Based RAW Compression from CMOS
3. Tapeless recording to SSD/HDD

If you already have HDV camcorder with HDSDI/HDMI/component output and want portable mobile solution for capture you have choice:
1. Cineform ProspectHD codec installed on Laptop or miniPC core 2 duo based (merom) with ExpressCard34 adapters

I saw the Elphel camera a while back, but it actually seems more complicated getting this into your camera and compressing.

The othor links I have also followed, but I guess the Mobility is the more interesting....However, will it reallly work at all points?
