A quick poll:

Price aside, which of the 2 monitors in question is better to use with EX1 (unfortunately have no opportunity to check them both)?

- the Marshall is only 800x480, but has peaking and false color functions
- the Ikan is 1024x600, which together with its even smaller size (5.6" vs. 7") gives a better "dpi" factor...

Both can be configured with the Sony BP-U battery plate, or be fed from external battery (both have regulated inputs - very important, with today's batteries capable of 20V when fully charged).

Comments welcome!

PS. Please narrow your opinions/recommendations to the 5-7" size monitors; as far as larger screens are concerned, there is probably nothing to beat the price/performance ratio of the SmallHD and Manhattan offerings!

I recently watched something I color corrected with this monitor on my sharp Aquos HDTV, and the saturation/levels/contrast was way, WAY off. I trust my HDTV more than this monitor because the monitor only has a couple setting: "Movie setting" (Overblown contrast and saturation) and "Photo Setting" (way to muted and dull). I don't like either of the settings really, but my eyes adjust and cause me to totally screw up my levels. This monitor is also very reflective.
Why do these reflective monitors only have over saturated and under saturated options? Can people actually use these things, is there some way for me to fix it? I just don't see why they were invented.

Hi all,

I am planning to pickup a Matrox MXO2 mini in addition to a smaller-sized HDTV to preview color output. This is by no means for high-end, professional color grading or color correction (I am completely new to that realm).

However, I am doing a small motion graphics project for a client and the colors/saturation are definitely off. I generated a DVD with edits that I've done with Apple Motion and FCP (no color correction or adjustments to levels, etc yet) and there is obviously inconsistency between what's on my 24" LCD monitor and a television set (be it SD or HDTV).

I was looking at televisions for the MXO2 mini and I was wondering if you guys think this would be a solid buy?

Amazon.com: Sony Bravia L-Series KDL-26L5000 26-Inch 720p LCD HDTV, Black: Electronics

Yes, it's only 720p (while the MXO2 mini supports 1080p), but I won't be editing 1080p soon and anything at 1080p and larger would blow my current budget out the door.

Thoughts?

Best,
James

I am trying to decide between the JVC($1650) and the EIZO($2200) and could use some help. This is strictly for monitoring connected to a pc using Premiere. I have a Matrox Mini but it causes more problems than it should.

1) For starters, the JVC doesn't have LUT whereas the EIZO does. Make any difference?

2) JVC=10bit internal, 8 bit display
EIZO=16bit internal, 12bit LUT, 10 or 8 bit display(using displayport or DVI)

3) Both have all the color controls on front but no Blue only on EIZO. However, the EIZO has presets for Rec 709 and several others. Since I will be CC for SD & HD web and broadcast, the presets should be helpful, right?

The price difference doesn't matter. I have read nothing but great reviews for both. I use Premiere, After Effects & PS CS4 and Cinema 4D 11.5 and shoot w/ an EX1 + Nanoflash.

Any input is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks

I'm using the Manhattan HD109A (10.9") HD monitor with my full rig (EX1 with Letus & 35mm llens, RR mattebox) on the tripod, and am quite satisfied.

However, I also need a smaller one for my RR shouldermount setup, so am considering either their 7.1 or 8.9" ones. Anyone using them? Looking at the pics attached (I have my current 10.9" monitor on it to give you an idea of scale) - would you say they 8.9" (e.g. HD8900) will be OK, or do I need to go for the even smaller one (e.g. the HD071A)?

As you can see, I'm also using the Hoodman loupe on the camera's own LCD; whenever peaking or zebra check is necessary, I can use it - but due to it being quite high, it's impossible to be used for a prolonged period of time; hence the need of a monitor.

Comments welcome :)

I'd love to get a conventional color correction monitor but that is not in the budget right now.

So...My research indicates the Dell 24" is the way to go (since the new Apple monitors have a mini display port that is not compatible with the MXO)?

If so, There are apparently two of these rascals out there. One for about $400 (an older model?) and the Dell UltraSharpTM U2410 Monitor for about $600 at the Dell Store.

Is the latter, more expensive one the one to get or will the other one work just as well?

Thanks
