Hey there campers,

I am Johnny, and I guess this is where I introduce myself to the forum, I live in San Francisco and along with having an education in digital cinematography, I also have been blessed to pick up steady work as a photographer traveling the U.S. taking portraits, creating senior high school portfolios, and getting my hands into a bit of advertising.

Actually, I was a member of this forum back in 2001 or 2002, starting around then anyway, and back then, the choices we had were not exactly so numerous as the acquisition gear available to all of us today. I give big time props to this site due to it's ability to help us production artists find our way through tough challenges without having a heart attack once or twice a day.

Today is different for sure, especially when it comes to formats, and my favorite, tape-less acquisition! Back in the day, I struggled to find the right tape, while not tearing up transports, it was just so marketed.

Now I am on the HD DSLR bandwagon, and I know that there are serious limitations with these cameras, but if you know what not to shoot with it, and you do all the pre production required, the results can be outstanding, especially considering that I can use whatever 35 mm lens that tickles my fancy at any given shoot to achieve exactly what I want.

I look forward to many discussions here on this forum, until the time comes, seeyea

Johnny

Hello Everyone

I am new to dvinfor, but I am ready to learn as much as I can. I have made my first video for my church. I shot a retreat that we had for couples. The members loved the DVD but I had serval issues with it. The main one was sound. My canon XL2's mic gave me a sound out doors on a interview that picked up back groung noise that I had to compress it to use it in the video.

So I need advise on what equipment I can buy that will give me better sound on my next project. I bought a hand held mic and a studio mic and know that I need a shotgun, I want the best quality I can afford 300-600 dollar range.

Thank to anyone who can point me in the right direction.

I've been messing about with cameras since I was knee high to a grasshopper. My first proper one was the venerable Canon UC3000 8mm camcorder that was put to good use throughout the summer of '97 filming the tooings and froings of the massive film crew that came to town in order to shoot Saving Private Ryan's Omaha beach landings. Hollywoods invasion of Europe happened a couple of miles away from my house in Co. Wexford, Ireland!

Recently I've purchased a Canon xh-a1 (whose firewire port died on me a mere month out of warranty), Canon HV20 (as a deck given my firewire issues) and a Sennheiser G3 wireless system.

All the best!

I am an EX-1 owner and up until this year have been going to the Colorado Film School. I got to a point where I felt like I wasn't really learning much more there and decided the best thing to do was get out and do. So now I'm putzin around town helping anyone out that needs it and recently got on board with a TV show as a Cam-Op!

Hello all. I am Jon from Deer Park, New York and I am about as novice as you can get. Hoping that this forum can help me move along and learn about videography. I have many questions and I will try my best to search the forum before asking, but I think we all know that sometimes the info is a bit difficult to find on a forum with this many people and so many threads and posts.

I tend to drift from hobby to hobby, and always am searching for the hobby that will turn into my next career. I spent 6 years on my last hobby, which was learning to play guitar. I started at 36 years old at that and am pretty happy with the progress I made, but clearly, making a living in music is a tough path. I think videography offers a lot more in the way of career opps than music.

I've been an electrical engineer, a software engineer, and am now a project manager, and I have to say, none of those paths have made me jump for joy when I got up in the morning to go to work.

So hopefully, I can learn a lot from all of you, and hopefully my background can be of some help to you all in return, until I reach the point that my input on the forum subjects is of value.
